You may be thinking that it's time to quit your job and become an entrepreneur. If that's the case, you will want to give it some additional thought before taking actions that you might regret later on. Even though the economy is rebounding after a long recession, this still might not be the best time to make the jump from employee to entrepreneur unless you know exactly what you are setting yourself up for in advance. Things to think about include the type of work you have been used to, your previous experience being self-employed, and the role your family will play as you make this life changing transition.
It seems like the longer you work at a traditional job, one that requires you to be there Monday through Friday from nine to five, the more difficult it is for you to make the jump to working for yourself. Be sure to spend the time to get to know if this is truly a life change you will be happy with years from now. Working for yourself as an entrepreneur or small business person requires that you take the initiative to make things happen, motivate yourself to keep going on a daily basis, and bring out your creative side to create or sell the product you will be focusing on. This could be Internet marketing or insurance sales, but either way nothing will happen unless you make it happen.
You will need to make a schedule to keep yourself focused every day. Just because you are working for yourself does not mean that you can come and go as you please, especially during the first six months or so. You will find that others suddenly expect for you to be available to help them or to have lunch, when you should be working. The best thing to do is to be honest with them from the very beginning. If it's an emergency you can be available, but if someone wants to have lunch in the middle of your workday you must say no and get back to work.
Set up your office so that you can have privacy and a quiet work space from the very start. This will make it much easier for you to stay on task. Whether you choose to rent an office or work from home, make sure you have the right work environment that will help you to be the most productive every day.
Your family and close friends must be on board with you working for yourself. Many families are used to having a regular paycheck every month, and just the thought of losing that can be very stressful for them. Include them in the process of deciding to leave your job and start a business so that they can feel like they are a part of the decision. Explaining what you are doing will help them to understand what it means to work for yourself as an entrepreneur. Once they get it, they will be your strongest supporters, and your business will thrive.
